What tools do you use to build the conversion and sync process?

Cloudpoint builds CAD-to-GIS ETL (Export, Translate, Load) tools using the Esri ArcGIS Data Interoperability extension for ArcGIS Pro, powered by Safe Software's FME. The tool is delivered as a Spatial ETL tool within an Esri geoprocessing toolbox, so it can be run directly from ArcGIS Pro and edited in FME if your team wants to make changes down the road.

How does the automated synchronization actually work?

Once the initial ETL tool is built, Python scripts run on a defined schedule to feed updated CAD data through the tool, validate the output, and keep your GIS in sync with the latest floor plans. Built-in change detection means only what's actually changed in your CAD files gets updated in GIS, so existing joins, edits, and integrations in your GIS data aren't disturbed.

What information gets pulled out of our CAD files?

The conversion process extracts room identifiers, space use type, and gross/net square footage directly from CAD text and geometry, along with building footprints georeferenced to your GIS coordinate system. Levels, units, and details are structured to be ArcGIS Indoors–ready if that's a direction your organization wants to go.

Will this break our other systems, like our CMMS or IWMS?

No. Cloudpoint designs the synchronization process specifically to preserve existing data joins and integrations, so updates flow into ArcGIS Enterprise or ArcGIS Online without downtime and without disrupting connections to your CMMS, IWMS, or asset management systems. Your other platforms continue operating off the same up-to-date GIS data.

What condition does our CAD data need to be in for this to work?

Most CAD floor plans developed to reasonable industry standards, such as polylines for building details and polygons for individual spaces, work well as source data. If Cloudpoint identifies data quality issues during the process, like inconsistent layer classification or topology errors, those are logged and reported back to your team rather than silently guessed at, keeping your CAD data clean going forward.

Who owns the tools once the project is finished?

You do. The FME Workbench, Python scripts, and supporting documentation are delivered to and owned by your organization, and can be run or modified independently after training. Cloudpoint also provides FME Workbench and Python script training so your staff isn't dependent on us to operate it.

Do you support 3D CAD or Revit/BIM data too?

Yes. While most CAD-to-GIS synchronization projects are scoped around 2D AutoCAD floor plans, Cloudpoint will convert and automate 3D Revit/BIM facility data into GIS, including for large-scale federal agencies and campus portfolios.
