Three ArcGIS Instant App Templates Worth Adding to Your GIS Toolbox

ArcGIS Instant Apps transform a web map into a polished web application in minutes. While ArcGIS Experience Builder offers more configuration options, Instant Apps may deliver all the functionality users need with significantly less configuration and a lower learning curve. They also provide an easy migration path for organizations replacing applications built with Web AppBuilder ahead of its retirement in Q2 2027.
The success of any Instant App starts with the web map. Clear symbology, useful popups, scale-dependent visibility, and thoughtful layer organization create the foundation for a successful application. Once the map is configured, an Instant App can often be deployed in minutes.
Three templates consistently stand out for local government and utility workflows: Sidebar, Web Editor, and Imagery Viewer.
Sidebar
The Sidebar template works well for public-facing local government GIS applications that help users search for information and view results alongside the map.
This template can be used to display parcel information, query voting precincts or school districts, or look up utility information. Because the sidebar remains visible while users interact with the map, information is easy to access without opening multiple windows or tools.
One often-overlooked setting is the Accordion option in the sidebar settings. When enabled, the accordion panel displays query results in a compact, organized list within the sidebar. This also reduces the risk that users will overlook the small “next” arrows at the bottom of the page in the default setup.
Hint: Turn off express mode to find this hidden setting. Then go to Sidebar > Information tools, and toggle the accordion panel on.

Web Editor
The Web Editor template provides a simple way to create browser-based editing applications for internal staff.
Address points, parcels, utility assets, signs, trees, and other GIS features can be maintained without opening ArcGIS Pro. This is a practical option for teams that rely on GIS software for utilities and local government asset management. The template includes editing tools, layer selection options, and snapping capabilities that support common maintenance workflows. For teams that also edit in the field, it pairs well with ArcGIS Field Maps.
Before configuring the application, all editable layers must be configured correctly. You must turn on editing in two places:
On each feature layer’s overview page, go to the settings tab and ensure edits are enabled. Fine-tune the settings with the add, update, and delete toggles.
In the instant app configuration, hand-select the layers you want to be editable. Turn off express mode, go to Editing > Selection, and check your selectable layers.

Imagery Viewer
The Imagery Viewer template is designed specifically for aerial imagery and raster data. It provides an easy way to compare imagery from different years using the swipe tool.
This template is particularly useful for planning departments, assessors, and public works staff who need to review changes in aerial imagery over time.
One small but important configuration improvement is the position of the Imagery Switcher widget. By default, the button appears in the bottom-left corner of the map, which can make it easy for users to miss. Because the icon is relatively small, many users never realize the functionality exists.
Using the widget position settings, the Imagery Switcher can be moved to the upper-left corner of the application, making it more visible and easier to access. This simple adjustment improves usability and helps users discover available imagery layers without additional instructions.

Final Thoughts
ArcGIS Instant Apps remain one of the fastest ways to deliver impactful GIS applications without the overhead of custom development. While Experience Builder is the best choice for highly complex workflows, many common GIS needs can be met by pairing a well-designed web map with the right Instant App template. Whether you choose the Sidebar, Web Editor, or Imagery Viewer template, a few thoughtful configuration choices can transform a web map into a polished, production-ready application.
