Cloudpoint Brings GIS To Small Towns

Cloudpoint is pleased to partner with surveying and engineering firms to bring GIS to these firms’ small municipal clients. Recently Brown & Roberts Inc. and Benton & Associates contracted Cloudpoint to provide GIS services to the City of Harrisburg, IL and the Village of New Berlin, IL.

Harrisburg’s GIS data is stored in a local geodatabase that is updated occasionally. After a recent watermain project, Cloudpoint utilized an AutoCAD file and Record Drawings provided by the engineering firm to complete these updates. The AutoCAD file was brought into ArcGIS Pro where the geometry copied into the geodatabase. When the data comes in from the AutoCAD file, it includes only the information stored in the AutoCAD layer (see image below and left). The record drawings were used to fill in the attribute information needed for the features. (see image below and right). Moving data from AutoCAD to a geodatabase is a simple process, with populating the appropriate attributes taking the most time.

New Berlin is looking to leverage ArcGIS Online as the home of their GIS data that has previously been stored in geodatabases and shapefiles. Cloudpoint will set up an ArcGIS Online account on behalf of New Berlin, publish the existing GIS data, and create maps that Village staff can utilize in the field to view and make updates to their data. One of our goals as a team is to create enthusiastic new GIS users, and we hope to add the staff of the Village of New Berlin to that list!
